With a week before this year's Super Bowl, I thought I'd bring out another slider recipe for those of you who watch the game. As we used to say when I was growing up, I don't have a dog in the fight, but considering I gave up watching pro football years ago that will always be the case :)
This slider is a little different. Most of the time you'll find layers of meat, cheese, and other condiments on a Hawaiian sweet roll, but this time around the meats are chopped up and piled on loosely, with an almost cole-slaw-like layer on top that really adds flavor to them. But prepared this way they're awfully messy, so have plenty of napkins ready.
I had one small issue with the original recipe in that it calls for quite a bit of filling for only 12 sliders. When I tried to assemble them, it was obvious that either these were supposed to be piled so high you couldn't pick them up, or there was a mismatch in the number of rolls. I'm going with the mismatch, and I've adjusted the recipe accordingly. You might find it better to your tastes to change it back... but that's half the fun!

In a medium bowl, combine lettuce, onion, pepper, mayonnaise, relish, and dressing, and mix until well blended. Place in refrigerator to chill.
Melt the butter, then add garlic powder, oregano, and basil. stir to mix thoroughly and set aside.
Preheat oven to 400 F. In a skillet, combine ham, salami, and pepperoni over medium heat until heated through (don't brown the meat). Remove from heat.
Line a lipped baking tray with parchment paper, place the Hawaiian rolls on the tray, then slice in half lengthwise. Remove the top half and spread mayonnaise on the lower half. Place in the oven for 5 minutes. Remove from oven.
Layer the slices of Provolone cheese evenly on the bottom half of the rolls. Spoon the meat mixture on top of the cheese, spreading evenly. Replace the top of the rolls on top of the meat, then brush the tops with the seasoned butter mixture. Return to the oven for 2-3 minutes to lightly toast the tops of the rolls, then remove from the oven.
Carefully life the tops of the rolls off and set aside (these will be hot). Spread the lettuce mixture evenly over the meat, then replace the tops of the rolls. Slice and serve immediately.
